“It is believed that in the beginning angels were created and heaven was thus formed; also that the devil or Satan was an angel of light, but having rebelled he was cast down with his crew . . . [But] there is not a single angel who was created such from the beginning, nor in hell any devil who was created an angel of light and cast down; but that all, both in heaven and in hell, are from the human race” Heaven and Hell n. 311.
It is Swedenborg’s claim that angels and demons are not a separate class of being than humans. His claim is that angels and demons are all from the human race. This means that we are all angels or demons in the making.
I like this idea. I like to think that I am becoming an angel, and dread the thought that I could be becoming a demon. I think we have tendencies to either here in the material world. I take comfort in Jesus’ words, “ Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30). It reminds me of a line from that Gospel song, “Just a few more weary days and then I’ll fly away.” I like to think I’ll fly away, the burden of spirituality being easy and light.
